When we moved into our current home my biggest fear was the lack of play space. We have a completely open concept downstairs and I could envision toys scattered everywhere all the time.
And then I remembered the HUGE under the stairs closet. It was the perfect space to build a little hideout, store all the toys, AND display homeschool visuals.
Here's how we made it work!
This closet is really 2-in-1. The first section is kept clear of toys on the floor and stores school supplies on the wall and shelf. I also used the inside of the door to display preschool visuals. We currently have a calendar, alphabet chart, and display pockets. In the future I will also add a number chart, word wall, etc. Everything on this door came from the Target Dollar Spot! The hanging file folders can be found here and the plastic shelf bins can be found here.
Interior Closet
The interior closet is the perfect hideout for my two kids (4 and nearly 2). To decorate the space I painted stripes on two opposing walls. I also used chalkboard paint to add a small writing space. Finally, since we had just hosted a "Where the Wild Things Are" birthday party I simply added decorations I made for the party!
The small bookshelf and green rug came from Ikea. Pillows, toys, and all other items were previously owned.
Toy Control
It may look like there aren't many toys in this "playroom" and that's for a reason! I purposely don't keep all of my children's toys in this space. For one, it would get very overwhelming in a small space. Secondly, my kids do much better with a toy "rotation." I keep the majority of their toys in bins in the garage and rotate them in when we need a change. I highly recommend this practice! It keeps toys interesting for longer and prevents boredom.
